Times Higher Education has reported over the weekend on the open letter signed by over 3,000 academics, including 2 Nobel Prize winner and 17 Fields Medallists, in response to news that Cardiff University plans to impose compulsory redundancies on its staff in the School of Mathematics.
The letter calls upon the University to reverse its plans, pointing to the School of Mathematics’ particularly healthy financial standing, the critical role that mathematics has to play in shaping Wales’s future economy, and the worsening shortage of maths teachers as reasons for the University to pull the proposals.
