On 13 November, the Campaign for Mathematical Sciences brought the maths community together for a parliamentary expo to mark Maths Week England. Kindly hosted by Chair of the Science, Innovation and Technology Committee and CaMS supporter Chi Onwurah MP, the event invited academia and industry to engage with policymakers and highlight cutting-edge applications of maths. Onwurah spoke of the importance of maths and science education and the benefits that a greater understanding of data science among parliamentarians and their staff could bring to policymaking.
We also heard speeches from Heilbronn Institute Chair Professor Catherine Hobbs who discussed the economic contribution of maths and Professor Aoife Hunt who spoke of her experience using applied maths in industry.
Shadow Minister for Science, Innovation and Technology Dr Ben Spencer MP and Liberal Democrat Universities and Skills spokesperson Ian Sollom MP also spoke of the value of maths, the importance of creating policy that supports science and innovation and the need to strengthen the teacher pipeline.
The expo showcased a wide range of innovative maths applications with exhibitors from the maths community and other sectors bringing maths to life. A full list of exhibitors can be found below.
A significant number of MPs and Peers joined us to meet with members of the community and exhibitors and learn how they can support CaMS to strengthen the mathematical sciences.
