Lords call on the Government to back maths

Members of House of Lords called on the Government to do more to support maths education at all levels after Lord Waldegrave tabled an oral question on support for the mathematical sciences.


Speaking in the chamber, Lord Waldegrave pointed out that the mathematical sciences underpin innovation in growth sectors such as AI and next generation computing, and he asked if the Government recognised the importance of maths to these areas:



Fellow CaMS supporter Lord Clement-Jones also made the case for addressing the maths skills gap in the UK economy, and challenged the Government to commit to a National Strategy for Maths:




As demonstrated by the further contributions of other peers, there is broad support for the mathematical sciences in the House of Lords and growing recognition amongst parliamentarians that more must be done to back the subject if key Government missions are to be achieved.
