CaMS spokesperson Professor Marcus du Sautoy writes for the FT this week that the withdrawal of funding for key maths schemes risks undermining the UK's AI aspirations.
Maths is a language to describe the universe, and without qualified and passionate teachers to convey that to children, the UK may lose its capabilities in the subject. He points to a concerning trend of department closures which jeopardise the training of the next generation of maths teachers.
Professor du Sautoy also argues that the Government's plans to lead the world in AI are out of step with the axing of various programmes designed to funnel more talent into the mathematical sciences, and that the small amounts saved have outsized economic effects down the line.
