Cuts to Advanced Mathematics Support Programme a step backwards – in the media

CaMS Chair Professor Jens Marklof has warned over recently announced cuts to the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme (AMSP) - a scheme that has successfully supported the take up of higher-level maths in schools across the country where further maths provision is otherwise unavailable.


In comments carried by the Financial Times, Professor Marklof said that the Government’s AI strategy hinges on ensuring that children of all backgrounds have access to advanced maths teaching which can set them up for further study at university level.


He praised the ability of the AMSP to spread opportunity and enable kids in disadvantaged areas to study further mathematics at A Level, opening up an array of options for academic study and high-value careers in frontier technologies such as AI.
