The Campaign for Mathematical Sciences has made a submission to the Treasury's Spending Review, as the Government deliberates on how it will fund departments against a tight fiscal backdrop.
As we argue in our submission, it is essential that the Government commits to supporting a thriving maths ecosystem at all levels, given that a full fifth of the UK's gross value add (GVA) in the economy stems from the mathematical sciences and its many applications.
Government priorities on economic growth and AI will be impossible to achieve without a firm commitment to maths. Maths is a high-growth, high-productivity discipline which links to a whole manner of cutting-edge sectors, from AI to the life sciences, and clean energy through to quantum computing.
Our community is deeply concerned by cuts to important initiatives such as the Academy for Mathematical Sciences and the Advanced Maths Support Programme. In addition, at least seven university maths departments have announced cuts or closures.
We hope the Government will urgently consider the case for enhanced support of the mathematical sciences and take immediate action.
