The Conversation has published an article by CaMS supporter, Dr Neil Saunders, in which he highlights the chronic shortage of specialist maths teacher recruitment in the UK.
Dr Saunders cites research from Professor Paul Wakeling, commissioned by CaMS, which found that growth in first-degree maths first-year enrolments in the last decade is concentrated among students from managerial households studying at Russell Group universities.
As set out in the Wakeling report, this trend is likely to worsen the shortage of specialist maths teachers: between 2017 and 2021, 17.4% of graduates from post-92 institutions went into secondary teaching, compared with around 5.6% from Russell group universities.
In recent months, there have been maths department cuts and closures at numerous post-92 universities, including Oxford Brookes and Huddersfield.
