Alex Gerko: Russian trader Gerko’s mission to help British kids live life by numbers

Alex Gerko, Founder of XTX Markets, is featured in The Times explaining why mathematics has been so important to him, his business, and why it should be more important to the country:


“The business also sponsors specialist maths schools, inspired by their success in Russia, and is paying for the creation of “maths circles2 across Britain for students aged 11 to 16 via an organisation called Mathematics Education for Social Mobility and Excellence. The circles, another Russian export, are after-school and weekend classes which aim to “develop students’ mathematical thinking and expand their mathematical curiosity”.


Aimed at parents who can’t afford to pay for additional tutoring for state school children, they will show small groups of youngsters “how beautiful maths actually is, teaching them to think like mathematicians”, no matter their social background, Gerko says.”
