Our plan for maths

Our mission is to advance the mathematical sciences for discovery, innovation and the economy. We do this by supporting engagement and providing specialist advice in maths policy.

Many of today’s cutting-edge discoveries and innovations are driven by mathematical sciences research, including in artificial intelligence, climate modelling, cryptography, data science, quantum computing and more.

Advanced maths skills boost productivity and command a significant wage premium, with maths being a top three subject for graduate earnings. Overall, the mathematical sciences contributed £495 billion to the UK economy in 2023, or 20% of the UK’s GVA, according to estimates by the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences.

Given the critical importance of the mathematical sciences, we are calling for the new government to adopt a five-step plan to maximise the value that they bring to the UK.

1

Develop a National Strategy for Mathematics to strengthen the UK’s global leadership in the mathematical sciences. A cross-government strategy should be created to provide joined up activity on teaching, skills, research, innovation and knowledge transfer.

2

Ensure that funding for mathematical sciences research reflects the value that they bring to the UK. A new funding settlement should redress the maths missing millions and grow the maths people pipeline, with a focus on early- and mid-career researchers.

3

Support universities to prioritise maths teaching and to prevent further course closures. An action plan is needed to maintain a healthy ecosystem of maths degrees for the future, with strong and sustainable provision in every region.

4

Invest in recruiting, developing and retaining maths teacher talent. Maths should be the top priority in the government’s strategy to recruit 6,500 new teachers. All options should be considered, including pay, incentives, professional development and working conditions.

5

Foster collaboration between academia and industry to accelerate R&D. A shared drive is needed to boost knowledge exchange, ensuring that the UK’s mathematical sciences infrastructure is harnessed to its full potential.
